Saffredi 2009 and its second wine

Dear Wine Lover,

One of our top selling wines in the recent years has been Saffredi from Tenuta le Pupille in Toscana.

Mr Keller the wine expert from the newspaper NZZ recently wrote an article about it mentioning „One of the best Bordeaux blends from Tuscany is Saffredi from Fattoria Le Pupille. The estate is located in Maremma and is managed successfully by Elisabetta Gepetti. The wine is a blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 47% Merlot and  8% Syrah (one of the variety, that doesn’t exists in bordelaise). External enologists are taking care of the high quality, like actually Christian Le Sommer from Bordeaux. The vintage 2008 is considered one of the best: dense, strong, mature tannins, good structure, median acidity, brilliant longitude. Surely a long-distance runner, who should rest as yet in the cellar.”

We have just been able to source some back vintages of this great alternative to the most sought after Tignanello and we are therefore able to offer vintages that are ready to drink as well as its fabulous second wine called Poggio Valente, a fantastic Morellino di scansano, perhaps the best you can have from this appellation.

75.0 cl Saffredi - Fattoria le Pupille - Elisabetta Geppetti 2009 CHF 45.00 (CHF 48.60 VAT Included)

36 bottles or more at CHF 42.00 (CHF 45.35 VAT Included)

Robert Parker 93: The 2009 Saffredi comes across as a bit subdued at this stage. Dark red cherries, licorice, tobacco and new leather meld together in this supple Saffredi. Overall, the 2009 looks like a fairly restrained and accessible Saffredi, with neither the structure nor the opulence of the truly great vintages. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2027.

75.0 cl Saffredi - Fattoria le Pupille - Elisabetta Geppetti 2007 CHF 55.00 (CHF 59.40 VAT Included)

36 bottles or more at CHF 53.00 (CHF 57.25 VAT Included)

Robert Parker 95: The 2007 Saffredi is drop-dead gorgeous. Roasted coffee beans, grilled herbs, mocha and dark fruit emerge from this beautiful, textured wine. The richness of the fruit radiates through to the long, polished finish. The 2007 Saffredi impresses for its fabulous balance and soft, enveloping personality. It is another superb effort from proprietor Elisabetta Geppetti. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2027.

75.0 cl Saffredi - Fattoria le Pupille - Elisabetta Geppetti 2006 CHF 58.00 (CHF 62.65 VAT Included)

36 bottles or more at CHF 56.00 (CHF 60.50 VAT Included)

Robert Parker 96: Geppetti has produced another gem in her 2006 Saffredi, a French-oak aged blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Alicante. This textured, explosive wine boasts considerable depth and richness in its dark fruit, flowers, minerals and graphite. The wine remains extremely primary and in need of considerable bottle age in order to offer its best drinking but it is unquestionably formidable. The style combines elements of power and elegance, achieving a level rarely seen in these parts. Simply put, this is stunning juice. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2026.
This is another strong set of wines from proprietor Elisabetta Geppetti, capped off by a marvelous 2006 Saffredi. —Antonio Galloni

75.0 cl Morellino di Scansano Riserva Poggio Valente - Fattoria le Pupille - Elisabetta Geppetti 2008 CHF 19.00 (CHF 20.50 VAT Included)

Robert Parker 92 Points: "The 2008 Poggio Valente is without question one of the successes of the vintage. Dark cherries, leather, licorice and tobacco are some of the notes that take shape in the glass as this cool, vibrant wine reveals its impeccable, refined personality. This mid-weight Poggio Valente reflects the cool nature of the year in a beautifully balanced, harmonious style. The 2008 Poggio Valente is 97% Sangiovese and 3% Merlot that spent 15 months in French oak barrels, 40% new and 60% 2 year-old. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020.

Elisabetta Geppetti makes some of the most delicious wines in the Tuscan Maremma. Readers who want to learn more about the estate should check out my recently published article on www.erobertparker.com covering verticals of the estate’s twin flagships Poggio Valente and Saffredi.
